    Description

    Albert Thomas Viola 15 1/4"
This beautiful Albert Thomas Viola was made in 1890 in Berlin, Germany. The neck, ribs and back have beautiful figuring (flame). The top not only is crack free, but has beautiful tight straight grain lines. The fingerboard is in excellent condition with no ruts or wear with incredibly tight grain. There is a slight roll off carve on the C string for added comfort while playing. This finish is a spirit based varnish. There are no cracks or open seams. There are no signs of neck grafts, neck resets, pegbox grafts or any other major structural repairs. There are 3 small number markings (196U, 691 & 36)   at the heel and on the back of the instrument as pictured above. The significance is unknown, but they are most likely inventory sku's from a conservatory.
    Width at nut: .970"
Thickness of neck at nut .850"
Thickness of neck at heel .920"
Width at end of fingerboard 1.775"

This viola has been very well cared for and was regularly serviced in New York at Cermona Music, Long Island Violin Shop and by luthier Ed Rock. The viola is outfitted with ebony pegs, chin rest, button and tailpiece. It has one gold plated fine tuner installed on the A string. Currently the viola is set up with Pirasto Evah Pirazzi Viola strings. The sound is full, bright, articulate and very responsive. The viola not only has a great attack but good sustain. This is your chance to own a 128 year old viola for a great price. Happy Buying.
